6:00 am
work, returning gifts at the mall and spending time with family, weather could be an issue. if you know anything about firefighters, you know it is a brotherhood. that's why this story stings so badly no matter where you live. a mainiac using a trap for firefighters as a target. lawmakers are heading back to washington to try to stop you from paying more taxes in 2013. they better figure it out soon. they have less than a week to do it. the vacation is over. it's the day after christmas, hope you had a merry one. thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning, i'm megan pringle. >> i'm charley crowson. we had snow on christmas eve here, the south and midwest got hammered with severe weather yesterday. >> what's in store? here's meteorologist mike massco. mike, it's nice to have you here in the morning. >> thank you. it's nice to be here. you know, guys, i think we'll see some snow, a little burst of snow coming in during the course of the morning. 32 at bwi right now. the atmosphere certainly moistening up a bit, northeasterly wind at just about 12. and notice temperatures across town, while we're at 35 in annapolis, down to the freezing
6:01 am
mark in easton, it's really chilly over our northwestern suburbs. 30 in eldersburg, 29 in manchester. notice on maryland's most powerful radar, down to the south of d.c., it's starting to snow and this is what's going to be pushing toward the north during the course of the morning hours. so about an hour 50 minutes away from the baltimore metro area, and this will come in as a burst of some snow through the course of this morning. not expecting much in the way of accumulating snows, a dusting to about an inch just toward the west of 695. and then you go beyond that up towards carroll county, northern baltimore county, could be about two to three inches of snow with snow going to ice going to all rain, five to 12 inches out over far western maryland. so here's your breakdown through the course of your morning hours. we'll stay cold, 7:00 temperature of around 33. snow is in here through 10:00 in the morning, we're at 35, going to 38 at 1:00 in the afternoon. so this is when the steady, heavy rain vops, after the lunchtime hour. could be one to two inches of rain, could be a foot of snow over western maryland. what is going on?
6:02 am
a whole lot is going on. we'll talk more about the storm coming up in just a little bit. let's get a check on traffic. what's going on on your end, lauren? >>reporter: well, mike, even though we're not supposed to get too much snow here in baltimore, that dusting can make the roads treacherous. prepare yourself for slick conditions. it could be really bad around 8:00, 9:00, later this morning. if you are traveling in howard county right now, interstate 70 nice and clear. no delays from colombia pike all the way over to 695. here's what 695 looks like. the west side nice and clear, traffic moving right along here at liberty road. and as we take a look at the abc 2 time saver traffic drive times, the east side also going to be free of delays. it's going to take you just 11 minutes right now on the outer loop from 95 all the way up to 83. and the northeast corridor of 95 going to be in great shape, no problems to report from white marsh boulevard down to the beltway. that stretch will take you a very easy four minutes. that's a look at your traffic. megan and charley, over to you. winter weather could be headed our way and it could impact your travels on the road a little bit later throughout your wednesday. abc 2 news' linda stow is live
6:03 am
along york road in baltimore county, and, linda, this could be affecting commutes not only in the morning, but especially late in the evening. >>reporter: yeah, because that burst of snow we're supposed to get is going to change over to rain and that could make things messier today. we should be okay for the morning commute. you heard mike say. we could be getting a dusting this morning at around 9:00 this morning, so towards the tail end of the commute it could get a little messier. we actually saw some contractors across the street over at the chipolte throwing out some salt on the sidewalk. so if you're out making returns today, getting shopping done, it might be -- you might be dealing with some slick sidewalks. so you want to be careful. it's going to be similar to what we saw on christmas eve. we could get up to an inch, and then it all changing over to rain. that means later on this afternoon and tonight's commute things could get messier. and with a lot of people heading back home after christmas, this wintery mix could pose a big problem, especially if you're traveling through western maryland which
6:04 am
could get up to a foot of snow, and then an ice storm. so, again, we should be okay for the morning commute. we could see that snow coming in at around 9:00 this morning and then changing over to rain. so the bigger problem will be tonight. we're live in baltimore county, linda stow, abc 2 news. severe weather stormed into mobile, alabama area on christmas night. the national weather service says an apparent tornado was spotted near downtown mobile. take a look at what looks like a large funnel cloud, sparking electricity. one man was in a church when that twister hit. >> i prayed to god as loud as i could, and i was just praying for my safety, and i knew the church was shaking. i just prayed that the church stayed put and god would protect me and the ones. >> there are reports of downed power lines and tree limbs, as well as damage to an area high school. new information this morning on a de we first brough breaking news last night at
6:05 am
11:00. police say a tawnytown police officer shot a man on commerce street around 8:30 last night. officers received a call about edward becker, jr. saying that he had been drinking and smashing the windows of his father's truck with a hammer. when they arrived on the scene, they asked becker to drop that hammer. he didn't, and they say that he came within an arm's length of the officer. police say that's when the officer shot and fired and the officer says that he was in fear for his life, that's why he did it. this morning he is on administrative leave. it's routine as this investigation continues. to baltimore county now where police tell us that one man is dead after he tried to break into a store in glen burnie. this happened early yesterday morning at arundel coin and collectibles. police say byron phillips broke into the store. a fight broke out between him and the employee and philip was shot. store employee who shot the man is cooperating with the investigation. his name has not been released. no charges have been filed as of right now. new details on a christmas eve attack that left two firefighters dead and three other first responders injured.
6:06 am
this is in a quiet upstate new york town. aaron kettersky has the details. >>reporter: the trap that killed two firefighters and injured three other first responders were set by this man, convicted felon william spangler. he may have also killed his sister. remains were found in the house. there was a chilling note read in part by police chief gerald pickerring. >> i still have to see how much of the neighborhood i can get rid of and burn down and do what i like to do best, killing people. >>reporter: the chief says the note makes clear spangler's intent, but his motive for murdering volunteer firefighters mike chipperini and mike chachucka and setting homes on fire is unknown. he served 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother with a hammer. it's illegal for convicted felons to own guns, but
6:07 am
spangler had three in his collection, a bushmaster. >> spangler armed himself heavily and started firing on first responders. essentially it was a combat condition. >>reporter: the two most seriously injured firefighters, john hossstetter and aaron scardino remain in stable condition. john ritter, the first who engage the gunman was treated and released. >> we'll get through it. >>reporter: the community gathered together at the webster fire station to show support and pay respects. >> thapg god for everyone of our heros. when that alarm sounds, it could be you, it could be me. >>reporter: aaron kettersky, abc news, new york. christmas vacation is cut short for president obama. he plans to leave hawaii tonight to return to washington d.c. tomorrow to work on a fiscal cliff deal before the year ends. house and senate members are
6:08 am
expected to reconvene that day without an agreement automatic tax increases for everyone and deep spending cuts will be triggered in the new year. the main dispute continues to be over taxes. some places, even here in maryland, got an unexpected white christmas. >> yeah. but certain places that never see snow got a a real taste of it. we're going to tell you how despite traffic tieups like this people were making the best of it. and chips, soda, condoms, where high schoolers in one district when they come back from their break, they're going to see a lot more in the school developing machines. get started now. your resolution, get a head start, we have you covered. i'm mike massco. down to the south and west we go. it's starting to snow. we're going to see a burst of snow this morning, but a big changeover to rain. we'll have the forecast coming up. >>reporter: mike, no delays here on 695 just south of burniee highway. i'll tet you know what traffic looks like on 83 on "good morning maryland."
6:09 am
a live look at times square where it is unusually dark. take a look at that, megan. let's head that way for a check of today's tech bytes. >>reporter: in today's tech bytes, less than a merry christmas for netflix. the video streaming service went dark for many customers on christmas eve and was out for more than 10 hours. netflix uses amazon's cloud servers which were down. for the first time sales are falling for e-rooders like the amazon kindle and barnes and noble nook. they're being replaced by tablets which are becoming cheaper with longer-lasting batteries. you may be thinking this morning about returning a christmas gift that was bought online. abc news technology editoranna sterns says if you mail it back, make sure you have the packaging and mailing label. if the retailer has a store near you, you're in luck. >>reporter: you can actually return it to a brick and mortar store return you. if you bought it to best buy.com, you return it to best buy. >> check the rules carefully. those are your tech bytes.
6:10 am
6:11 am
6:12 am
it was a wet and white christmas for drivers in california. >> take a a look at this. this was the scene just north of sacramento. people headed through that area had to deal with delays, some even pulled over to put snow chains on their tires. the weather may have been a headache for some, but for others it was a welcome change. >> i mean, you're stuck in traffic here, but you're enjoying it? >> yeah. i'm kind of enjoying it. we don't get a lot of snow in india, where i come from. >> that's right. we've never actually had a white christmas. i guess this is the first. we're in the car, though. >> it's a lot of fun. anyone who travels today can see the snow. >> more snow and rain is forecast for the area once again today. it can be a really welcome sight. i know a lot of people who felt
6:13 am
that way on christmas eve. >> oh, yeah. >> it was so nice to see the snow. >> facebook was lighting up with people saying this is nice. it was just a little taste of snow and then it was outta here. i like storms like that, by the way. i like them to come in, get it in, get it out. you know, that's how it is. and i think this storm is going to be at the same deal, but a lot of rain with this one, right, along the coastal sections and could be an ice storm to the north and west. advisory wise, we are advisorying you folks in carroll county, out towards fredrick county, just be ready because we're going to see a rain, snow, ice mixture, a mess to the north. while we're at 37 in the city, we're hanging onto the upper 20s to 30s outside the beltway. look the eldersburg 31 degrees. everything that comes in right now -- or i should say in the next hour or so will fall in the form of some snow. you'll notice over the southern suburbs of d.c., back down into virginia, you're dealing with the snow and that's what's lifting up from south to north during the course of the morning hours. you'll notice 15, 20 minutes outside of the city limits and
6:14 am
this will start to move in during the morning commute, the tail end of the morning commute. so first is this burst of snow that's going to come in and then it's going to change over to rain for the city. still could be a wintery mix over our northern counties and an ice situation north and west of town, north and west, really, of 83 as you go into they aremont and monkston you could be deal iing with an icy situation. rain totals, that's the other aspect of the storm, one to two inches of rain and there could be some severe weather, maybe some thunderstorms down in salisbury and ocean city. so you gotta keep a watch on channel 2 during the course of the afternoon. it's snow, a rain mixture, just about a coating to an inch from the city to points to the north and west. the cutoff is going to be 83. west of that two to three inches, snow, ice, going to rain and this is just going to be a raging snowstorm north of that, north and west of therma. so the first storm, here it is over the tennessee valley, moving to the north. how about another storm rolling ashore right now into sacramento. that's a storm we have to keep
6:15 am
a watch on for saturday. it's going to be an area of low pressure that develops. it goes offshore and then the question is how close is it to the coast? if it is coast enough, lauren and charley and all of us are going to be going sledding. a lot of us will be going sledding. if it goes offshore, that's just a mist and i think we'll see some flurries. so 40 in town, heavy rain, wintery mix to the north. here's your seven-day forecast. everything ends tomorrow morning, 42 degrees. friday a blend of sunshine and clouds. over the weekend, keeping an eye on storm number two, temperatures will be into the 30s and could be some snowy, messy everything going on over the weekend. so we'll talk more about that and the current storm coming up in just a little bit. let's talk traffic. let's see what's going on on the roadways, lauren cook over in the traffic center. hi, lauren. >>reporter: hi, mike. as the morning progresses, you want to be extra careful. around 8:00, 9:00, that's when the rain will start to fall. the roads will be slick. you're taking a look at hartford county, no delays on mountain road norks problems getting to white marsh this

6:17 am
determine what stays and what goes. >> read the label. if in the first five ingredients on anything it has an added sugar, an added syrup or a non100% whole grain, kick it out. >> good advice, but going cold turkey usually works best when you eliminate the five food felons from your kitchen cupboards. the foods might attempt you if they're there, but if they're not, you can't eat them. high schoolers in philadelphia will be greeted with a new kind of vending machine when they return to school for the new year. condom dispensers. free condoms will be offered at 22 of the city's public high schools. the schools chosen for the pilot program had the highest rate of students infected with sexually transmitted diseases in that city. those students, even as young as 14 will be eligible to get the condoms unless their parents sign a form, prohibiting them from taking part in the program. well, collecting anything for 20 years will get you an impressive assortment. >> it's what can be said for
